“Knowing”… (AKA NO-ing)

“Knowing”… (AKA NO-ing)

I’m pretty sure we’d all admit that Nicholas Cage has carved out a nice little groove for himself in the world of Entertainment.  He has a unique flair about him that is somewhat haphazard and loose fitting while maintaining sharp edges with a pointy attitude.  The combo of those qualities make him seem sincere and for a “bad boy” he stays likable and everyone puts up with the rocker/superhero act. And he’s got the blessing of his piers times two along with mine and my dog’s.

Lately his little groove seems to be getting smaller and smaller.  Save “Bangkok Dangerous” and “The Weather Man” (which I liked) good ole Nick is unwittingly adapting a single expression of anxiety on his face. And he’s cleverly phoned in to all his “Save The World” movies of late like “knowing”, “National Treasure Hunting” “The One Where He’s On Fire and Rides a bike”, “NEXT” (very appropriately named) to name a few. He’s become completely obsessed with riddles only he can solve and or becoming a super hero (of any kind) and saving the world. I guess there’s a bunch of money in saving the world.

“Knowing” is another one of those world ending films that are so popular now. There are a few cool scenes and director, Alex Proyas (The Crow, Dark City, I Robot) does do a good job of mixing in a real creepy “old-school drama thriller” that can hint at horror without being horror but that goes away pretty quick once all hell breaks loose. It just doesn’t do anything new or different. It is worth a rental though.

As for Nickolas Cage, I’m sure there’s another couple of “Leaving Las Vegas”, “Family Man” or “Adaptation” jewels on the road ahead. Can you make a Hall of Fame career on just those three movies alone?  Oh Yeah, no doubt, dude already has the hardware on his desk.

Nick, the world just loves you when you hate yourself, makes us feel happy.
